Just did it with Witch. Now, that was a fun game. A quick summary of the challenge: Anti-Progress:Defeat 2 allied Knight-level AI on a large map with the society set as Dawn of a New Empire Player class: Necromancer, Demonologist, Witch, Troll King, High Cultist AI classes: Baron and Senator Society: Dawn of a New Empire Common cause: On Cluster start: Off I started on a peninsula mostly covered by forests. There was only one mine on the entire peninsula and it was well guarded by dwarves. Some crazy peasants have built a village amidst a forest, this village and a nearby farm being the only signs of the progress I was trying to stop. Thus, by the time I've met my enemies I had a decent fungi income, but no gold income to speak of, no backup citadel and only 3 commanders: two Witches and one Apprentice. Accordingly, my strategy was to hide in the forests close to enemy territory, summoning things, avoiding strong enemy forces and absorbing the weak ones. I was doing rather well when things went crazy. Something really wrong had happened between the worlds and, as the result, legions of dispossessed spirits came to Elysium, ruining everyone's income. My tower was attacked by the spirits thrice, but fortunately, only by small numbers of them. It was only defended by a couple of crocodiles and a handful of 'shrooms, so an attack by some 50 spirits would be an instant game-over. To make things worse, one of my Witches recklessly attacked what she thought was a weakened Baron's main force. It went very wrong and she died horribly, taking my strongest army with her. Combined with a spirit invasion, that was a huge setback. But I overcame it eventually while the AI never truly recovered. My only real problem in the rest of the game were Baron's citadels, equipped by a respectable amount of siege weaponry. But I found that a Doppelganger Captain accompanied by a couple of Creeping Dooms can handle almost any garrison with easy: Trebuchets are mostly firing at the Dooms and Ballistae do not do enough damage (the Captain regenerates after each volley). Overall, that was a very exciting game, although not as challenging as it could have been, thanks to the AI being crippled by a random event. Playing this challenge with Witch feels a bit like cheating. You get Creeping Dooms eventually (pretty early, if you're lucky) and almost all enemy troops have only a physical attacks. To which the Dooms are immune. A human player would probably counter that with Senator's mages, but such strategy is a bit too complicated for the AI to implement effectively.

This one was not easy for me. Well, I think it could have been, if I had just picked Troll King, because the Troll King is way overpowered . I can see how witch would be strong too though. I wanted to beat this with either the necromancer or the demonologist for more of a challenge. It took me a couple of days to accomplish because, well, a Senator and a Baron have pretty much an infinite supply of chaff troops that can knock through the small but elite troops of the demonologist, and the necromancer can't really easily meet chaff for chaff with these two on knight difficulty. Eventually, I had a breakthrough as the demonologist though when I took the Senator out of the game really quickly, as he started next to me but never managed to expand the amount of citadels he had. The baron never really managed an attack on me, which I found strange because it took me a long time to actually find him (I was looking on the wrong side of the continent). And then when I was exploring his realm, I noticed something strange. No less than 7 ancient forests all grouped relatively closely to each other . I felt sorry for him as I imagine he spent the whole game in a death battle with independents taking his assets. When I marched on his capitol, he clearly had a lot of troops to spare though for battle, as he had about 600 troops spread out in four different armies. I had about 60 troops, but they were all very meaty things like hellhounds, and 1/4th of my army was spellcasters, and they were lead by 3 goetic masters with lots of summoning spells. His capitol was still unassaultable though, as he had no less than 15 siege engines . Basically, I'd waylay his commanders as they wandered around the capitol, and the end was somewhat anti-climactic because he simply ran out of commanders and lost Very fun match though. Attachments:

This was a fun match, even though I surrendered after losing my main army. Using a Demonologist, I managed to defeat the Senator, but the Baron had so many commanders running around grabbing resources that my attempts were hopeless to even put a dent in his forces. Maybe next time.

I must have someone looking over me this week . I was able to complete this one just now with a Demonologist. The enemy rushed into my territory fairly early with maybe 5-6 total commanders each with decent armies, but I was able to dispatch them without too much trouble. I was quite surprised when the game said that the AI was out of commanders and I had won. Attached is the end of the game score file. I wonder if there is another way to have the score file append so that I can get an entire game in one file. I try to remember to rename it before each game, but sometimes I forget and it seems to overwrite each time the game starts. Oh well. I will have to try the demonologist again sometime to get to the more powerful end game summons. I never did get a mage offering to hire, or at least not another demonologist/cultist. I got spoiled in my Druid game with all the apprentices they offered me. Attachments:

But note that the Trial rules were slightly simplified and attaching the gamelog is no longer required.

Completed Anti-progress as a Demonologist. Two key aspects made it possible:
1) Conquering almost half the map before running into my foes, which enabled me to get my sacrifices up.
2) Summoning a succubus, who charmed a Hill Giant, a Manticore, and a Roc to serve as the core of my front lines.
I thought it was all over when the Baron and his million troops showed up, but by that time, I had summoned Sydonai the Lord of Corruption, whose Mass Corruption removed/charmed half of the other army before the battle actually began. Joined later by Morax the Prince of Death who summons 2-82 undead at the beginning of a battle, I became a steamroller. The game took two days longer than it should as I leisurely explored the rest of the continent while the Senator cowered in the southwest.
One of my favorite moments was when a trio of Ice Devils held off a 100+ Senator army by themselves, subjecting their foes to several hail storms and blizzards.
Good times.

Just won with a Necro. No ancient temple unfortunately. Got a pyromancer to train several times at a library after finding a fire boosting gem which was cool.

Completed this achievement as a demonologist, playing the 3.03 patch version, which nerfs the hellhound's fire breath to ranged*, so it's either bite or breathe.
Took me 155 turns, late summer of year 13 being when the Baron's last roaming army and last citadel were both annihilated during the same turn.
Got one hell of a start, with a city next to me, but that was far too heavily defended to even consider. However, the hell part comes from the graveyard and three ancient forests that surrounded my starting location as well as the serious lack of any sacrificial sources. In order to get those, I had to venture from the northeast corner to the central map with one army and fight a running battle with both enemies while a secondary army run into similar forces in the southeast and had to summon for all it was worth to stay alive, but both forces triumphed.
The game was over for the enemy when I took the baron's castle and secondary citadel, wiping out the bulk of his forces with little losses. Wall of hellhounds and demon knights for the win!

Won this on 3.04 as a Druid. Didn't take too long. I won with a killer stack of legendary summons + barechesteds killed them one by one. If the AI raided more consequently it could have citadel-killed me. But it didn't ;-).

Won this on 3.04 as Druid. This was my first game as a Druid, so really had no idea what to expect. It took awhile for me to find an ancient forest, but once I did, and upgraded to an elder druid, it became a whole lot easier. I also lucked out with a river splitting the map with the senator's outpost next to a bridge. Once I took that, I had map control. The Senators had 1 good spellcaster that managed to take out a druid, but other than that, my regular druids seemed more powerful than their spellcasters. Never got a chance to summon legendary beasts, as I was quite happy with spending my herbs on upgrading to elders and spamming major summons.
I really love the variety of summons dependent on the terrains. Getting packs of rabbits from the plains was really handy when having to take out watch towers packed with the senator's ballistae.

Won with 3.09 as High Cultist. I didnt get good start spells, and I screwed up the beginning and they both got way ahead of me so I almost quit it. But the "just another turn" syndrome got me. I stabilized my position. Then I thought hey this is one of my strongest nations. Baron/Senator couldnt easily take me out if I played smart and slow.
Smart and Slow is definitely NOT my usual mode. But I finally beat them on year 90 (turn 362). OK that isnt an impressive win. But Im proud of it. Because I didnt give up when the AI had more than double what I did. At least it was a pure strategy win and not my usual luck win. In fact, I dont think a major summons worked even ONCE for me in the entire game.

As usual, I was playing with v3.17 on steam in linux. I won the first try with High Cultist, starting from the southwest corner of the map on a little peninsula. It was a sheltered location, as the AI never found me and I only encountered a few wildlife stacks all game. My strategy was to skirt around the edges of the small map with my main amphibious hero and raise an initial army of shamblers to take the coastal villages. The second hero secured my peninsula then scouted the center of the map, briefly tagging 6 enemy assets at the beginning of year 3. Encountering much resistance, that commander then retreated and headed around the coast on land in the other direction. By the time my two forces met, I had already summoned two basalt queens and was just now summoning my second basalt king. Conveniently the full might of my army met in early year 6 right at the main coastal citadel of the enemy Senator. My army of 85 units including some decent summons crushed the 55 defenders in his citadel. I quickly reinforced them with all available gold and summons, as we braced for the inevitable AI counter-strike. The Baron arrived first with 120 units including a lot of knights, but my now 110 unit stack rode out to take them in the open field. I survived with only 1 1/2 rows of melee units (about half being pillars of the depths), and needed to again bolster my front lines. Luckily that was the worst, and though I never moved more than a few space from the citadel, I sequentially crushed another 80 unit Baron stack, and three stacks of 50-70 units that the Senator threw my way. They had thus recklessly lost each and every commander, leaving me a victory by late year 7.

I don't know if this one will count for me. I pulled druid from the game maker web script, but it was my first time playing as druid so I repeated the scenario 3 times before I won. Version 3.18, 73 turns. Not sure if I should be re-rolling for which class each time I lose.
The major highlight was summoning a huge great boar (the one with 75 HP) and learning that a) you can give troopers magic items, not just commanders and b) boars have two ring slots. I came upon a spirit ring and then had an ethereal 75 hp boar. My main army was passing around a amulet of regeneration between various bears that needed to cure afflictions while one the march. If they were closer I would have made an ethereal regenerating huge boar.
I killed the very last opponent army literally the turn before I would have upgraded from druid, so I don't know what comes next.
Learning that piddly troopers can be given magic items is of great interest to me. Didn't learn that until this game. So, even if I need to re-roll the character for this achievement, this game is still a milestone for me.
Also, tyvm for coming up with these challenges. It is helping to keep me entertained as I rest, recovering from a moderately serious illness.
