That leads to another question... the Soultorn are on player slot 9 (whereas I thought the independents were 8--sorry, going from memory right now)... perhaps the Soultorn are considered to own the location and are triggering the message. That means the trigger went off once and that it wouldn't go off again, right?
Try setting the ownslocevent to send a message just to you, and fire up the game and see if you get the message whenever the Soultorn take over.

Thats a good point. The reason I use 9 instead of 8 is that 8 seems to create wandering independents, and 9 seems to create immobile ones.

Interesting to know... I might have to look into that more. If I want to keep indies from roaming, I just give them a commander type unit, but I don't make him a comm. Problem with that is that the indies do sweep the units up and put them in an army.

Well that did turn out to be the problem. I think I will ask Johan to change it so that -1 ignores both 8 and 9. I dont think he meant for 9 to be included in that

Am I correct that there can only be 8 players in a scenario (plus 2 versions of independents)? I originally designed a map to have 10 players, but then we only have 8 available colours it seems.

As far as I know, yes. 0-7 are players, 8 appears to be the wandering independents, and 9 seems to be immobile (or driven by a program like the Merchant is). Last time I checked I think 10 failed to show up

"A Crazy Cat Lady has taken over a farmhouse and is breeding hundreds of cats to release into the wild. Someone please stop her." A washer woman appears at a farm. For as long as she is still in the game and owned by independents, Familiar Cats will appear at random locations around the game. Not particularly dangerous but very annoying to army movement to have to stop every turn and clean them up.
"A Great White Stag has appeared in an Ancient Forest and is creating armies of particularly angry deer." Instead of wandering deer, create groups of around a dozen or more with move settings to take and hold resource centers. Continues as long as White Stag exists.
"A Cathedral has appeared for the 'Green Peace' movement. If you summon the great Compost Dragon there then his followers will grow. They will convince villages to become self-sufficient farms." Taking Magic Acorns and Magic Spores to the cathedral will call the Compost Dragon (Carrion Dragon). As long as it exists, random villages will become farms populated with Insane Peasants defending it. Taking Gauntlets of Knighthood and Horror Helmet to the same cathedral will create the Dragon of Progress (Iron Dragon) which causes random farms to convert to villages.
Mystical Column says "in the far east" or "where the merchants land".... place a Ferry and next to it a Labyrinth. if you clear the Labyrinth then Merchants appear more often
a mitigating event for the Infernal Gates. Takiing Gauntlets of Knighthood and Sword of Heroes to an Infernal Gate will destroy it (replace the gate terrain with a farm, wasnt that what it was originally before the gate appears?)
A Woodsman appears who can chop down an Ancient Forest and build a Village from it.
An Officer of the Law appears who can convert Brigand Lair to Forest. But he is weak so to make him really useful you must get him to join you so you can escort him around.
An Exorcist appears who can turn Haunted City in normal City. (too much? maybe haunted city to town? village?). Also make him able to clear the undead portions of the 4tile city into normal versions. Maybe a special quest to a special cathedral will give you an Exorcist
On turn 100 a random Old Castle becomes owned by Independents and a DemiLich is placed there. For as long as the DemiLich exists (player 8 owns a demilich) then random appearance of ?? (horrors?)
Use setterrain command to place a ? or ?? onto a map. they appear to the players as giant white question mark or giant red question mark. Reaching them can cause a surprise to appear (the special sites for the special generator killers maybe?)
A special site (or quest if highly defended). When owned it will take 500 gold from you. If it succeeds in taking the gold then it gives you ?? (ArchMage's Spell Scroll? Tome of High Magic? 3 War Elephants?)
a REALLY BIG nasty thing could be tossed into the game. Fairly unkillable and wandering. As long as you make it INSANE doesnt that mean it wont wander very often?

Hmmm I was doing some searching for idea files. Mostly I found DnD campaign quest stuff which will work ok for putting quests into a map. But then on a totally separate thing in IRC I dug up the Dominions 3 Events List. WOW. That would be fun to build off of and add as many as possible as random events to happen in a CoE3 game. www.dom3minions.com/docs/events.txt

Acutally that is sort of in the works (I just keep some things under wraps because I jump around between work and other stuff so much). But that definitely helps and can be supplemented with a little CoE3 flavor. Thanks gp!

Agreed. The only issue is work stuff and personal interests are competing for my time Haha, and I feel guilty using the wiki to look up units I've never seen before (for scenarios and quests), takes a little of the surprise away when I play CoE3. I am trying to learn Python for my work and am wondering if some sort of random quest generator could be written... it would be a script that generated a .c3m file each time you ran it... anyways off to work!

I could see that. We could start a separate thread for that.
I once had (long lost) a program I wrote as a DM aid for adding surprises to DnD games. Basically I took a bunch of standard quests and turned them into madlibs. So "rescue a Princess from Dragon" become "$action a $noun from a $noun" which randomly came up as "reascue a Dragon from a Hobbit Village". Lots of fun.
